lisa mclaughlin
Lisa McLaughlin is an Ohio native who studied fine art and graphic design, earning her a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toledo. In 1989, she relocated to Nashville and began a career in the music business, which led to designing album covers and merchandise for several of the artists she’s toured with.
Work and occasional pleasure trips have taken McLaughlin around the world, providing a great deal of the imagery and inspiration she draws from. Her favorite places are around the Mediterranean, where the sea and sun along with weathered architecture are of particular interest.
McLaughlin is a founding member of Contemporary Collective, a group of some of Nashville’s finest abstract artists, as well as a member of the Nashville Artist Guild.
Artist Statement:
Abstract has become my favorite style of painting. I feel it is my creative process at its most authentic, just working through the process of pure feeling, movement and expression until the painting reveals itself. My work is intuitive, colorful, layered, and textural.
I find as much beauty and inspiration in graffiti or the grit of a run down building as I do in a famous landmark or beautiful sunset. I believe traveling as I so often do has given me the comfort and freedom to explore on canvas as I’ve done around the world.
It is my opinion that a true artist, regardless of age or experience, is never finished learning.

Mescola is Italian for "mix, mingle, combine.." which I did here with this painting, with many layers of paint, paint skins and some charcoal. Mescola II was recently featured in a juried Southeast regional exhibition called "All The Fixin's, Artists from the South" at the Reeves House Visual Center in Woodstock, GA.

From the artist: I was walking back to my hotel at dusk down Chestnut Street in Chicago during that magical part of the evening when there’s still a hint of color in the sky, but all the city lights are coming on and it made for a colorful scene. This is my impression of that evening.

Inspired by travel to no particular place, I gave this imaginary landscape its name because of its dynamic energy, colorful interaction and sense of motion.

Aziza is named after a creative young Moroccan lady who makes one of a kind jewelry. She used to set up in my friend's market in a Paris suburb, and her colorful pieces often included these bright citrus colors. I love her name, and her work, and this mix of colors and unusual shapes makes me think of her jewelry.
