Artist Statement
It’s not uncommon for viewers to stand—slack-jawed—in the shadows of California’s giant Redwoods, the largest trees on Earth. Perhaps the adjective “majestic” was purpose-built to modify the name of this species, but even acknowledging their majesty, the scale of Redwoods are at least relatable to our human size; it’s a difference we can measure with the unaided eye.
At the other end of the size range exists a bizarre, tiny world virtually hidden from us without the chicanery and witchcraft of specialized lenses. Magnified, the flora within our own backyards are unrecognizable, and their natural colors are often stunning. But what if we allow ourselves to be willingly mislead? What if we participate in a fiction of arrayed, unnatural light? What if we submit to a world where “alien” and “reptilian” are the most appropriate descriptors for plants we thought we knew?
Welcome to these pretty lies. Welcome to SPECTRUM.
SPECTRUM will be on view at gallery43’s satellite showroom, gallery43.2. Located at 135 Church Street in historic downtown Marietta, the space provides an intimate view of gallery43 resident artists’ works.
